I had the splendid opportunity to work with my friend, Shina, for their CSULB BFA animation senior film as a prop and asset artist. They had a dedicated spreadsheet explaining exactly what was needed and would improve on. I used Photoshop for the entirety of this project.

CHARACTER REVISION

There was a small concern about the difficulty of the original protagonist design. I took interest in the adorable silhouette of them and wanted to help by experimenting. I wanted to exaggerate the shapes even more by having a bigger head and triangle body, and although I enjoy both before and after versions, it was awesome to see mine influence the formal reference.

ASSET WORK

The bulk of my tasks came from painting objects and illustrations that changed over time. The fish, for example, had to have a specific journey from being fresh to being cooked, and I kept the lines layer because I knew the major changes would come from the colours. For the polaroid photos, I was told to focus mainly on the emotion of them, as they showcased important memories. I decided to highlight this by using a paintbrush tool because the blurriness of it all has a nostalgic feel to it. The family photos were the most complicated due to the amount of characters and freedom I was given. I was told which members were needed and some key features, and the rest I could fill in. Thankfully, the only character that need to drastically change was the protagonist to show their growth, so I was able to reuse the first drawing once all the characters were done the first time.
