Confection Connection (2018)

Created in 2 weeks for My First Game Jam Winter 2018. Run a café in space, follow instructions from a cute menu, and get to know your customers who are too eager to share with you their problems.

This was my first Game Jam submission and first time being included in a game development pipeline. I approached a group looking for a 2D artist to assist their lead in a pixelated anime style.

Characters

After determining the setting, I had roughly 2 days to make all the side characters that were not relevant to the plot. I began to wonder who would go to a bakery, and what they would wear. Because the game was targeted towards a teen audience, I decided to have the majority of the customers be of that age, with the occasional outlier for interest. Imagining the fashion trends for this world was a bit more difficult, I was not particularly inspired by a specific era or concept and my lead was unfamiliar with styles, so I took a lot of artistic liberties. I ended up defaulting to generic items that were associated to sci-fi such as transparent clothing and technical gear, and used vibrant colours to back it up.

I was also put into charge of designing main characters that the protagonist could influence. The writer had given me a snippet about what each character was like, but I was told I could add onto the backstory with visual details if I wished. This led to me to brainstorming how aliens would look in this new planet. Though not all the designs made it in, I was able to partake in the outfit design of each one.

Menu Items

I had the most fun working on the food. I was given a number of items to make while the lead worked on the others. Since the setting was set in the future, I imagined that their technology and ingredients would allow anything to be possible, which allowed me to make anything I want. Still, I would go to familiar shapes the player would be able to recognize, such as donuts and a cappuccino.

I also made all the ingredients and assigned them along with the preparation method in the menu according to what I felt would be accurate. I ended up giving too many ingredients per item in hindsight, but I now have a better understanding on how short term memory can affect gameplay. Needless to say, I often saw people struggle remembering what to do.
